Leslie Ashman: The Man Who Helped Save My Police Career — Now He Needs Our Help
Leslie Ashman: The Man Who Came to My House and Helped Save My Police Career — Now He Needs Our Help
A Jamaican Young Police Special Humanitarian Appeal | By Ex-Detective Chris Porter

Some people give you money. Some people give you opportunities. Others offer advice that helps change the direction of your life. Leslie Ashman is one of those people in mine.
The visit I have never forgotten
Years ago, during a difficult period in my police career, Leslie Ashman came to my home in Eltham Park, Spanish Town, St. Catherine. He told me to go to the Jamaican Police Academy and speak with Detective Granville John Gause. I followed his advice. His visit became an important turning point in my career.
I grew up in Jones Town and Concrete Jungle, Kingston 12, where I witnessed hardship and violence. I chose public service, spending years in the Jamaica Constabulary Force and later serving in the United States Navy. Along that journey, I have never forgotten the people who helped me.
One visit. One conversation. A lifetime of gratitude.
Leslie could have remained silent. Instead, he came to my house and gave me guidance when it mattered. Sometimes the greatest gift a person can give is not money but direction. I cannot know what would have happened without that visit, but I know that his kindness made a difference to me.
The news that left me shocked
When I learned that Leslie was facing serious medical challenges and that his family was appealing for assistance with urgent surgery, I was deeply shocked and saddened. I remembered that day in Eltham Park and the advice that helped shape my future. Gratitude has no expiration date.
The family's GoFundMe appeal
According to Leslie's family fundraising appeal, he served for more than 36 years in the Jamaica Constabulary Force. His family reports deterioration in his health associated with spondylosis, a degenerative spinal condition, with significant muscle weakness and loss despite physiotherapy. They report that a neurosurgeon recommended urgent surgery to prevent further deterioration.
The family reports estimated surgery costs of £30,205 and a fundraising goal of £23,000. These figures are from the family's appeal and may change. Please consult the campaign directly for the latest information.

My Jamaican Young Police family, please consider giving whatever you can comfortably afford. Five dollars, ten dollars, twenty dollars, or more can make a difference. If you cannot donate, sharing this appeal with friends, family, former colleagues and community groups can also help. No one should sacrifice money needed for their essential expenses.
To my former JCF colleagues and the Jamaican diaspora
To former and serving police officers, and to Jamaicans across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the wider diaspora: this is a chance to honor kindness. You know the value of guidance and friendship when someone's career or future is uncertain. This appeal is not about politics or rank. It is about compassion.
